Body Type Calculator

Enter your shoulder, chest, waist and hip measurements to find your body type.

Enter measurements in centimetres (cm).

Why Does Knowing Your Body Type Matter?

Body type is a practical guide for clothing choices, exercise programme design and styling decisions. It is a great starting point for learning which clothing cuts suit you best and which exercises balance your body proportions. This tool analyses your shoulder, bust, waist and hip circumference measurements to determine which of the 5 main body types you fall into.

Body type classification is intended for aesthetic and clothing purposes and should not be used for health risk assessment. Consult a doctor for health-related matters.

How to Use This Tool

Required Measurements (in cm)

  • Shoulder width; horizontal distance between the two shoulder points
  • Bust circumference; horizontal measurement at the widest point of the chest
  • Waist circumference; at the narrowest point of the waist, ~2 cm above the navel
  • Hip circumference: horizontal measurement at the widest point of the hips

Calculation Logic

The tool compares the waist-to-hip ratio and the bust-to-hip difference. If the waist ratio is below 0.75 and the bust-to-hip difference is less than 5%, it classifies as hourglass; if hips are more than 5% wider than bust, as pear; if shoulders or bust are noticeably wider than hips, as inverted triangle; if the waist-to-hip ratio is high, as apple; otherwise as rectangle.

5 Main Body Types

Hourglass

Bust and hips close in measurement, waist noticeably narrow. Considered the most balanced body type.

Pear

Hips and buttocks wider than shoulders/bust. Weight concentrated in the lower body. Also known as pear-shaped.

Apple

Wide waist circumference, weight concentrated in the abdominal area. Also known as apple-shaped.

Inverted Triangle

Shoulders and bust noticeably wider than hips. Athletic V-shaped body structure.

Rectangle

Shoulder, waist and hip measurements close to each other; a straight line without a pronounced waist indentation.

How Should You Interpret the Results?

Body type is not a fixed category but a spectrum. You may sit on the boundary between two types — this is completely normal. The calculation may return a pear close to hourglass or an inverted triangle close to rectangle. The waist-to-hip ratio score is shown alongside the result; as this ratio changes, the type may also change.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  1. Use a flexible tape measure, holding it lightly against your body without pulling tight.
  2. Measuring in the morning gives more accurate results; waist and abdominal measurements can change after meals.
  3. Use a mirror if possible to check that the tape measure is level.
  4. Taking each measurement twice and averaging the results improves accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Weight gain or loss, exercise habits and age can all change body proportions. Building muscle tends to shift the shape towards an inverted triangle, while losing weight can shift it towards hourglass.
